I was on the verge of (probably) driving myself mad setting up PSX games on my PSP today. I just assumed that Duckstation wouldn't work because my track record with other emulators has been shit on Linux but it actually does run. Considering it runs on Android I guess I shouldn't be surprised but still. I managed to get ares working too so I have some more stuff I can emulate too (though not all the cores for ares are good, but the ones I care the most about are). So that more-or-less completely saves me from having to pull out my laptop just to use emulators, which is nice.

I have been playing a little DQ9 but most of it has been grinding. Your extra party members all join at level 1 so it's kinda needed. I think I did the next boss at like level 7 or 8. I tried it at level 6 but it didn't go very well, and while I think I could have gotten it I just grinded a little more. Which turned out to be a good thing because level 7 is when mages get sap (single-target defense lowering), which obviously helped a lot.
